Memories

Memories......
I know we all have memories of those we love and from those who are closest to us.... They come frome places we have been and simple fragrence, the smell of freshly mowed grass or the passing of fields.

My memories come from my mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles.  My grandmother Lena Fernandez, of which I am proud to carry the Fernandez.  When I listen to Hawiian music, I can't help but smile.  Memories fill my mind of hula dancing and castanets clicking, although I remember thinking...what are those made from, still don't have that answer.  My uncle Benny and Auntie Glory, they lived right behind my grandmother with a gate in the middle of the fence which made visiting easy for all of us.  My uncle Benny was retired Navy, who cooked for the Admiral.  Boy could he cook, born in the Filipinino Islands and growing up in the states made me happy especially because he married my aunt Glory.  Watching him cook looked so easy and it was good.  Pancit was one of my favorite dishes, one day I will learn to make it.... yes, memories of family, food, music, danicing and laughter those are the one of the best.

Memories of my mother was also about music and laughter but also this is where my crafting started.  My mother from a little girl could draw, in her teenage years she drew hummmm, pretty ladies with not so many cloths on but she did it tastfully and the boys like it, this is how she made money for lunch, time where very hard back then.  I'm proud to say she is an artist, although the ladies now wear clothes. I could never draw or paint like her but I discovered one day after she gave me a cloth and thread with a needle I could cross stich.  It wasn't until later after I married that I started stiching again.  My mother taught me to knit, crochet and sew, all of which she did along with rasing four children and cooking on the weekends for family who came to visit.

Knitting and crocheting and just crafting makes me feel good like eating comfort food which I like to do also.  But I can't craft without thinking of how I found my love to do all the things I create without remembering my mother.

Memories

Memories, our days are full of them, the smells can take us so far back and put a smile on our face.

This week our son came up to visit us, we put the IPod in and Hawaiian music began to play, the sun was out and the day was very warm, I put together some snacks and sat outside with my husband and enjoyed the music.  For a while the memories of spending time at my grandmothers house came back to me.  She and my grandfather lived in Oakland, her sister my Auntie Glory and my Uncle Benny lived right behind them.  They were very close as sisters can be and my uncle had put in a gate where both backyards met.

Weekends were so much fun when we visited, bbq's music and lots of laughter.  Sneaking over to my aunt and uncles house was my get away time.  Their house was small and as I had found out many years later, he had painted the outside of the house pink because it was her favorite color, he loved her very much.  The inside of the house was full of their memoires, Hawaiian albums from the many trips they made, which are now mine.  Uncle retired from the Navy and I enjoyed walking around the house looking at the pictures of the ships he was on.  He was the head cook and made special meals for the Admairl, there was a letter framed with thanks from him.  Auntie would always make uncle cook something for me and he was happy to do so.  He was born in the Phillipine Islands so cooking was he favorite thing to do.  I can remember the small stove witht three burners, how he made all those meals I will never know.
When I was 16 I over heard some of my aunts talking about when they first got married and had a Hope Chest.  Not really understanding or ever saw one, I thought I should have one after all your suppose to save liens and such for when you get married.  One day my Aunt Glory came to visit my parents, I loved it when they came to visit, my aunt would always make sure I had $5.00 to get something for myself.  One day during her visit, I told her I wanted to show her my Hope Chest which really was a large shoe box, but I had collected some lace end table cloths and I was proud to show her. She never let me know that it was not really a Hope Chest but she smiled and said she would add to it the next time she came to visit.  Years later after I had married and had my children, she told me that after she passes on, that she wanted me to have her Hope Chest.  The day came two years later after she passed that my uncle ask me if I still wanted the Hope Chest.  My husband and I came to pick it up my uncle said he had left some things in but had taken the letters he had written to her while he was in the Navy, just like the house he painted pink for her, the letters were written for the same reason...... because he loved her.

Memories are a part of who we are and mine are in a special place in my heart.

Memories

Memories, we all have so many of them, they help get through tough situations, when we find ourselves not knowing which way to go, so we pull from those who have meant the most to us.  We remember their words or a smile, Memories, they are a big part of our lives.

The four day week has been a very long one but now it's Saturday morning and I feel so renewed.  Sitting on our deck watching the sun slowly move threw the trees, listening to the birds sing as they chase each other from branch to branch.  Such a peaceful time to think gently about Memories.

Thursday brought back memories of my four sons on their graduation day.  As Paul and I sat on the cement seats of the high school football field, I looked across, as Paul and I had never been here before I saw that the school colors were the same ( green and gold ) our sons school colors.  I thought as we waited for the grads to walk out onto the field I rememberes how I had with excitment looked for my sons in the long line of young adults making their way to the chairs.  I couldn't believe it when I saw them, they made it through high school.  My grandson's mother was sitting next to me and I knew how she felt but I learned from a long time ago, not to say those words, this was her day and what a wonderful day it was.
